What a great day to visit the Launch Pad program in Troup County! Members of the WGRESA Literacy team enjoyed seeing how this program builds social, emotional, and early literacy skills through play-based, language-rich experiences. As you can see by the smiles, everyone had fun learning together! @ Launch Pad Troup @Troup County School System

Our West GA RESA Literacy team hosted a day of Professional Learning for the literacy coaches in our region. We looked at the new literacy law and state coaching standards and discussed planning for coaching cycles. We welcomed building administrators virtually as we heard from Stacey Lutz, Georgia's Literacy Coaching Coordinator. Our day ended with our Regional Literacy Coaches and Regional Literacy Leadership coaches meeting with the school-based literacy coaches in our coaching zones. What a great way to begin our year together!

West GA RESA Let's Read Georgia Literacy Coaches LeAnne Cheatham, Jennifer Barbee, and Ronette Burnett have been learning and leading at the state quarterly meeting with the goal of excellence in literacy and coaching. Our meeting was held in Augusta and featured professional learning with a golf-themed twist including "The Coaching Caddy: Supporting Teachers Toward Engagement Excellence" led by Mrs. Cheatham and "The Coaching Swing: Mastering the Art of Powerful Questions" led by Mrs. Barbee. Great ideas for supporting literacy instruction across the state!

Last week, Let's Read Georgia Literacy Coach Ronette Burnett visited Glanton Elementary to read aloud in first and second grade classrooms. First grade classes enjoyed the book, The Man Who Didn't Like Animals. The main character does not like animals until one fateful when day a cat shows up on his doorstep. One by one, the man welcomes new animals until the end of the story when we realize that this man is actually Old McDonald in the famous children's song! We used this text to learn the words "tidy" and "cranky," and then students wrote about a time they didn't like something and then changed their mind like the man in our story. We had great writing from students who didn't like green beans, avocados, or baseball at first but later changed their minds. Please enjoy the pictured compound -complex sentence featuring beautiful letter formation from one of our first grade friends who changed her mind about baby dolls. So many GA ELA standards coming together in this classroom!
